A lot like roaches, bedbugs are great hitchhikers. Bed bugs can’t fly but they crawl pretty quickly. They move from one site to the next by climbing on or into luggage, boxes, clothing, and even furniture.
One female bed bug can lay between one and twelve eggs each day. It does not take long for one or two hitchhikers to turn into a HUGE problem. Bed bugs feed on the blood of warm-blooded hosts. Because of this, they will hide near their host until they are ready to feed. Don’t let the name fool you. Bed bugs can be found anywhere humans live. Not just in the bedroom. They will move throughout the house in search of a host.
Bed bugs do not live on their human host. They are attracted to the warmth of the human body and the carbon dioxide we breathe out. While they are afraid of light, they crave blood. So they will come out during the day to feed. Even though a bedbug will typically feed for 3-12 minutes and gain as much as 6 times their weight while feeding, people often don’t feel when they are bitten. This is because bedbugs’ saliva works as an anesthetic numbing and increasing blood to the area. This makes the feeding process almost painless. After feeding, the bedbug hides for 5-10 days in a warm dark place to mate, lay eggs, and digest the blood.
